Legal Professional Ethics

  • Legal Professional Ethics

      • A legal practitioner is a person from whom the highest standards are expected by the profession and the Courts. He/she is a member of a
respected and honourable profession, and by entering it, pledges total and unquestionable integrity to society at large, to the courts, and to the profession.

Ethics form part of the professional duties of practitioners whether or not they are codified and listed in codes of conduct and legislation.
Ethics are recognised by the legal profession as part of a ‘social system’ in which legal practice is carried out and the rules to which members of
the profession must adhere. Legal ethics forms within the broader realm of ethics and can be defined as the minimum standards of appropriate
conduct within the legal profession, involving the duties that its members owe one another, their clients and towards the courts.

The final Code of Conduct for all legal practitioners as well as candidate legal practitioners has been published by the South African Legal
Practice Council. The Code regulates the professional conduct of legal practitioners to ensure accountable conduct to the public.

The Code of Conduct can be accessed by members of the public using

Hi, I’m Kailash Pillay, an attorney from the city of Johannesburg. My passion for the law
stems from a desire to improve upon the lives of the vulnerable who fall prey to a
        corrupt system.
I studied at the University of Johannesburg where I obtained my Bachelor of Laws
degree, the starting point to the long journey of becoming a legal practitioner.
This profession has taught me to persevere through the complexities of the law and to
continually develop my skills as a legal professional.
